I should add that there may be a relative lurking in this august crowd. My mother sent me the picture with a query as to whether I could make heads of it, or perhaps tails. I could not, but I have seen pictures of the great-grandmother who would have been in Chicago at the time, and her stunningly beautiful face is not among this lot. However, that leaves unanswered the question of how it ended up in the family archives, unlabeled, unloved and alone.
Is indeed a puzzlement. No one looks like the other great-grandmother who also was in the Chicago in that time frame either.
She did however have a maiden sister who was an asst. principal of a school and was a formidable woman. It is possible that she might have been celebrating the saint's day with some organization of teachers - and, if so, she might well be the one with the crozier and stern mien, being an "in charge" sort of person. I knew Aunt Anne years later and she didn't look much like this, but maybe...
I cringe to admit this possibility but can think of no other reason for this fascinatingly awful picture being in our archives. Cushlamacree indeed.
Cushlamochree!
ReplyDeleteSaints preserve us, sure and they look like more fun than Murphy's wake after the Priest left.
