I figure one of the very purposes of youth is to put salsa on ice cream.

I'm just going to slip my "Celtic Women" CD into the hi-fi and enjoy that ancient Irish ballad, "Orinoco Flow."Brian Fieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16347700145666751363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30017373.post-1871269435500587712009-03-14T14:11:00.000-04:002009-03-14T14:11:00.000-04:00Oh, goody! Thanks, Mike!

Flogging Molly isn't the salsa for my ice cream, either, but the Pogues... well, they're sorta like salsa-flavored jimmies for me now. I didn't go out of my way to listen to any of their stuff until we heard "Thousands Are Sailing" on the car radio in Ireland -- over and over and over. I don't know why it was getting so much airplay, but it won us over.Sherwood Harringtonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09575868746160608731noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30017373.post-34623858690239280262009-03-14T12:52:00.000-04:002009-03-14T12:52:00.000-04:00I'd heard of, but not heard, Flogging Molly, so ju...I'd heard of, but not heard, Flogging Molly, so just went to Rhapsody and had a listen.

My first impression is that you could set up a continuum starting with The Pogues (traditional music, untraditional instrumentation) then going to the Dropkick Murphy's (mostly traditional music, unabashedly non-traditional approach) and then to Flogging Molly (non-traditional music with some Irish influences). Pretty far from any actual Irish content, but that doesn't make it bad music. They do a very few semi-traditional songs, but the bit of "we'll play the first verse traditional-style and then suddenly we'll ALL GO CRAZY" seems a bit formulaic and tiresome.

I'm trying not to be an old f@rt, of course, but, while I really like (Maritime fiddlers) Ashley MacIsaac and Natalie McMasters, I find a little innovation goes a long way, even when you are being wonderfully, passionately faithful to your roots, and this is pretty far afield from that.

So I guess my verdict is that, if I want to listen to Irish folk, I'll do that, and if I want to listen to rock, I'll do that, and I don't put salsa on my ice cream, either. But each to his own.Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16807727819590358834noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30017373.post-24530364594331376752009-03-14T12:00:00.000-04:002009-03-14T12:00:00.000-04:00All right, I'm a little afraid to ask, but wonderi...All right, I'm a little afraid to ask, but wondering if you've heard of, and what you think of, the band Flogging Molly. My kids love 'em. Despite my proudly Irish grandfather I don't know much about the Troubles, but FM strikes me as a politically opinionated English-despising fusion of traditional folk and modern rock. All I know is I like some of their tunes.Brian Fieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16347700145666751363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30017373.post-56825913291055111892009-03-14T07:33:00.000-04:002009-03-14T07:33:00.000-04:00Thanks! Now I'll just picture you singing lead for the Dropkick Murphys while occasionally letting Sinead have a song.Vt Teacherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02586877001508428666noreply@blogger.com
